2MASS observations of spectroscopically identified extragalactic C stars
We matched spectroscopically identified C stars (from low resolution objective prism surveys) in the Magellanic Clouds with 2MASS sources. We confirm that C stars show a large spread in absolute magnitudes, even in the Ks band. We show that the I and Ks magnitude distributions of a population of C stars (in the LMC) have a similar narrow dispersion if the C stars are selected in a well defined ...
متن کاملGravitational Waves from Stars Orbiting the Sagittarius a Black Hole
One of the main astrophysical processes leading to strong emission of gravitational waves to be detected by the future space-borne interferometer LISA is the capture of a compact star by a black hole with a mass of a few million solar masses in the center of a galaxy. In previous studies, main sequence stars were thought not to contribute because they suffer from early tidal disruption. Here we...
متن کاملAge-Distance diagram for close-by young neutron stars
An age–distance diagram for close-by young isolated neutron stars of different types is introduced and discussed. It is shown that such a diagram can be a useful tool for studying of populations of sources if their detectability strongly depends on age and distance.
متن کاملAge, Metallicity, and the Distance to the Magellanic Clouds From Red Clump Stars
We show that the luminosity dependence of the red clump stars on age and metallicity can cause a difference of up to ∼ <0.6 mag in the mean absolute I magnitude of the red clump between different stellar populations. We show that this effect may resolve the apparent ≈0.4 mag discrepancy between red clump-derived distance moduli to the Magellanic Clouds and those from, e.g., Cepheid variables. T...
